ThurroBread – F Block *PHILLYS NEXT BIG THING*

I’ve been watching this dude ever since he started rapping and I can definitely say, he’s got it.  He’s got a unique flow, swag, and a tight clique.  In this song that he sent me, F Block, he tears up an old Jim Jones beat that you might have heard… I could definitely see Thurro blowin up in Philly in the next year or two.  Remember this name, I’m sure you’ll be seeing it again.

Jason Derulo – Whatcha Say (Acoustic) (2009)

Who says singers that use auto-tune can’t sing?  Well, logic does.  However Jason Derulo wanted to prove that he doesn’t need some futuristic voice modulation technology to make a hit… Jason Derulo released a (semi-) acoustic version of his incredibly popular hit “Watcha Say.”  I must say that I’m very impressed with Derulo’s singing ability.  I took him for just another auto-tune user on the long list of auto-tune users in the 21 century…

Ester Dean – Drop It Low (ft. Chris Brown) (2009)

Ester Dean, an emerging female artist in the hip-hop world, has recently released the track “Drop It Low.” Little is known about this artist aside from her recent signing with Interscope Records. This track beautifully showcases both Ester Dean’s and Chris Brown’s singing voice and will be surely stuck in your head all day. With regards to Chris Brown: at the end of the day when you look past his recent incident with Rihanna, the guy can sing. With use of the E phrygian dominant scale and superimposed E major scales over the E phrygian dominant beat, this song is sure to be a huge song in 2009.

TAF Throwback: M.O.P. – 10 Years and Gunnin’ (2003)

Some rappers use nothing but epic beats (i.e. Jay-Z, DMX, etc.).  However, I don’t think I’ve ever heard a more epic rap duo than M.O.P.  In 2003, M.O.P. released their greatest hits and I must say, the album title definitely fits.  Every track features both Fame and Danze goin’ off on incredibley epic beats.  Among the tracks my favorite are Ante Up (you’ll probably remember this from You Got Served), World Famous, and Handle Ur Bizness.  This is definitely a must-have for any classic hip-hop fan.

Tracklist:
1. How About Some Hardcore
2. Handle Ur Bizness
3. Fly Nigga Hill Figga
4. 4 Alarm Blaze (ft. Teflon and Jay-Z)
5. Ante Up (Robbin Hoodz Theory)
6. World Famous

Taylor Swift Feat. T-Pain – Thug Story (2009)

By now, we’ve all heard I’m On a Boat by Lonely Island featuring T-Pain – pretty funny stuff.  It seems as though Mr. Pain has been feeling goofy lately, considering his most latest joke song release Thug Story with Ms. Taylor Swift. I haven’t got much to say about the track except that it’s pretty funny…

Lil’ Wayne ft. Young Money Entertainment – Every Girl (2009)

Lil’ Wayne is undeniably at the top of the mainstream rap and hip-hop scene.  Ever since the release of Tha Carter III, his fan base has been growing more and more.  His recent accomplice and the newest addition to the Young Money family, Drake has been tearing up the scene as well.  Every Girl was released in the U.S. on June 13, 2009.  The premise of the song is that Lil’ Wayne and his crew want to have sex with every beautiful woman in the world.  Do I think that this concept is absolutely ridiculous and that it totally doesn’t deserve a song made about it? Yes, absolutely yes… however, with Drake’s flow and the very nice melody of song along with the sweet, sweet beat, this song is sure to become one of the most popular in America soon.

Brian Blade Fellowship – Perceptual (2000)

Brian Blade is a modern drummer similar to few others – exceedingly versatile. On various records and tours he has flaunted his impressive technical talents, and on others such as his fellowship record, Perceptual, he has demonstrated his proficiency in creating tasteful, composition based jazz. Perceptual opens with a mid-tempo track that in many regards sets the mood for the remainder of the album – solos that do not parade individual technique but rather build upon the ever important melodic themes presented throughout. That is not to say there are no cooking tracks, however. “Evinrude – Fifty” breaks into a funky, articulated attack led by Blade’s syncopated drumming. Do not listen hoping for a display of drum heroics; instead, this is the contemplative side of Brian Blade.

Tracklist:
01. Perceptual (6:26)
02. Evinrude-Fifty (7:54)
03. Reconciliation (6:42)
04. Crooked Creek (9:07)
05. Patron Saint of Girls (2:40)
06. The Sunday Boys (1:06)
07. Variations on a Blood Line (9:07)
08. Steadfast (8:18)
09. Trembling (2:16)

Mos Def – The Ecstatic (2009)

Coming back with his first album since ’06, Mos Def lets everyone know that he’s still one of the best NY rappers around (as well as one of the best rappers around anywhere) with his new album The Ecstatic (set to hit stores officially 6/9/09, but was released a day early on Amazon).  The Ecstatic still maintains that great Mos flow while still introducing more and more sides of Mos.  Several tracks on the album have a middle-eastern theme, full of quarter steps and sitars.  Unlike other MC’s out there, Mos Def can actually pull this style off without looking like a complete idiot. Some of my favorite tracks on the album are Auditorium, Priority, and Life in Marvelous Times.  I had very low expectations for this album considering Mos Def’s recent activity in the hip-hop scene (very low if you didn’t know…), however this is one of the best hip-hop albums I’ve heard in the past 3 years.  Mos Def is one of few MC’s out there that still disproves Nas’ proposition that hip-hop is dead.  Ha! Take that Nas!

Tracklist:
1. Supermagic
2. Twilite Speedball
3. Auditorium (feat. Slick Rick)
4. Wahid
5. Priority
6. Quiet Dog (Bite Hard)
7. Life In Marvelous Times
8. The Embassy
9. No Hay Nada Mas
10. Pistola
11. Pretty Dancer
12. Workers Comp
13. Revelations
14. Roses (feat. Georgia Anne Muldrow)
15. History (feat. Talib Kweli)
16. Casa Bey

Trey Songz Feat. Drake – Invented Sex

With the recent success of his track Best I Ever Had off his newest mixtape, Drake is currently at the top of the rap and R&B game.  His versatile voice allows him to both rap with a solid flow and also sing with a warm, unique tone.  When you match this raw talent with a well-known singer such as Trey Songz, you come out with quite a collaboration.

Invented Sex is a song by Trey Songz featuring a verse of Drake.  The premise is that Trey Songz is so good that if you sleep with him, you’ll be convinced that he invented sex himself.  With Trey Songz’s great singing voice and Drake’s popular rapping, this is sure to be a popular joint.
